Kendal
Kendal is home to a multitude of historically exciting buildings. The Romans left us with the camp at Watercrook on the banks of the river Kent. The Normans left behind not one but two castles and a church that is only a few feet narrower than the mighty York Minster. The Elizabethans and the Victorians created a wealth of architecture that can only usually be found in larger towns and cities. All making Kendal a North Western gem that deserves a visit.

Windermere
Windermere’s library serves as a museum as well as a public facility. It hosts the exhibit “Wings Over Windermere” which explores the area’s role in aviation history during World War II, including the testing of flying boats.
After World War II, the Calgarth Estate near Windermere, previously used for the flying-boat production, was repurposed to house 300 young Holocaust survivors. These children, aged 3 to 18, arrived on August 14, 1945, flown directly from Prague to Crosby-on-Eden airfield near Carlisle. Having endured years of suffering in ghettos and concentration camps, they came to the Lake District to begin their recovery. This poignant chapter of history highlights the resilience and camaraderie of the children, later known as “The Windermere Children.”
The exhibition in Windermere library, “From Auschwitz to Ambleside”, tells the story of the “The Windermere Children” who were rehabilitated in the Lake District after the war. These exhibits add historical depth to the village.

Milnthorpe
Milnthorpe is a small market town on the southern border of Cumbria, 7 miles south of Kendal, once part of the township of Heversham-with-Milnthorpe. Now spared of heavy traffic, it is an ancient village of limestone buildings, arranged in nooks and crannies and along narrow lanes.
Milnthorpe was a medieval market town and, apart from Kendal, was the most important community in the area.
In 1334 King Edward III granted a Charter to Alexander de Wyndesore permitting a weekly market on Wednesdays and a fair on St Peter’s Day 29th June.
Later Friday became Market Day and the Petertide Fair was replaced by a Cattle Fair held on the 12th may and a ‘back to fair’ in the Autumn.
The cattle fairs ceased in 1929 but Spring and Autumn fun fairs can still be held. In 1931 the Dallam Tower and Levens Hall estates as joint Lords of the Manor granted ‘controlling the conduct of the Square’ to the Parish Council.”
